Discipleship

The Bible seems to be so vague sometimes, Eugene Peterson alludes to this vagueness when he says that next to Christ being the fullness of the revelation of God, the best description we have of God is 'I am that I am'. This description stops us from being able to control God, to fit God into schemas that make him easy for classification, thus freeing God, to be God and to do what God will do.

I've been thinking about discipleship lately and a similar problem seems to arise, namely, what is a disciple? Well, an easy answer is that a disciple is one who believes in Christ, birthed out of that belief they follow in the life, actions and teachings of Jesus. But that in itself seems like way too much!

I read in the gospel according to John (chapter 2) this morning and was struck by something that happens when Jesus attends the wedding at Cana. Verse 11 really stood out to me:

"This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him".

So here is one thing that a disciple of Jesus does: takes notice of the manifest glory of God.

It isn't huge or a sign in the sky, but the changing of water into wine that reveals the glory of God!
As disciples of Christ we are to go into the world and to make disciples, and I would like to encourage that an aspect of making disciples is to point to the glory of God constantly being revealed in the world around us.

We only need eyes that see!
