Jonathan's blogWhat's on your Christmas list?Submitted by Jonathan on Sun, 2011-12-11 21:36. [ Blog ]I came across a great little blog as I was preparing for today, the Advent Sunday of joy, and so I shared this with our church. Here are the opening lines: I agree that “it is more blessed to give than to receive.” But I also quite like to receive, don’t you? And other people who love me want to know what to get me, so I help them by composing a Christmas list. Plus it’s fun to finally just put right down there what I really, really want. Seminar with Alan Hirsch at Regent CollegeSubmitted by Jonathan on Wed, 2011-02-16 22:38. [ Blog ]For those who are interested in these kind of things, Alan Hirsch, along with a couple of local guys, will be at Regent College on Sat. March 12, from 9:30am-4pm. The cost of the seminar is $35 and you can register at the Regent Bookstore. The theme of the seminar is "Everyday Mission for Everyday People." Alan is a really interesting guy who has lots of good things to say to the church. I read his latest book, Untamed, and it was very good. I don't know that I'll be able to make it out due to other commitments, but thought that I would pass this along. Christian yoga - an oxymoron or good contextualization?Submitted by Jonathan on Thu, 2011-01-27 21:35. [ Blog ]I recently wrote up some thoughts that I had on yoga and contextualizing the gospel on a blog that I've started. It's kind of long-winded, so if you want to skip some of my ramblings, you can cut to the chase in the third posting. Either way, read through it and let me know your thoughts. Youth groups destroy kid's livesSubmitted by Jonathan on Wed, 2010-11-24 10:28. [ Blog ]So goes this provocative posting by David Fitch. Fitch does admit that he is stirring the pot by being provocative but hey, Jesus too was known to use hyperbole from time to time. A brief summary of the three points he makes: The Naked Anabaptist and ChristendomSubmitted by Jonathan on Fri, 2010-07-23 22:55. [ Blog ]Did that title get your attention? I've been reading a book entitled "The Naked Anabaptist" by Stuart Murray which highlights some of the essentials of my background (Mennonite) and how they might be relevant to the position of the church in our society today, specifically with respect to the decline of the Christian society (Christendom). » read more | 2 comments
"Missionary Spirits & Christmas" | December 08 ThoughtsSubmitted by Jonathan on Tue, 2008-12-02 22:04. [ Blog ]It’s Christmas time and Jesus’ incarnation, his coming to earth in real flesh and blood, has been on my brain lately. It’s all because of a book I recently picked up again. The book’s main premise is that the idea of Jesus’ coming as a baby should serve as a model for cross-cultural missions. Now, most of us aren’t cross-cultural missionaries in the traditional sense, but really, anytime we interact with people who have values and lifestyle patterns different than our own, we are engaging in a form of cross-cultural ministry. Prayer and KidsSubmitted by Jonathan on Thu, 2008-10-16 10:05. [ Blog ]OK, so this is Megan blogging from Jonathan's account because sadly I have forgotten my password and now must confess that I have been logging on as Jonathan for the past 2 years whenever I wanted to check things out on the websight. BUT, that said I am writing to remind all the moms out there or anyone else who feels a calling that we will be lifting up the kids in our church and neighborhoods in prayer tomorrow morning. However, I have decided to change the time to ten so that we actually start praying at 10:30 and can wrap up by 11:30. Looking for a good devotionalSubmitted by Jonathan on Tue, 2008-05-06 22:47. [ Blog ]I just came across this site and thought that it was worth sharing with our community. It contains a morning and evening set of prayers and bible readings. It comes out of community much like ours; in fact, it sounds like they come together every evening to read these and pray together. Kind of a neat idea. War in the Kingdom of God (Part 2)Submitted by Jonathan on Fri, 2008-01-18 05:09. [ Blog ]In my last post, I talked about how our understanding of warfare in the kingdom of God is often more like superhero plotlines than a biblical understanding. In particular, I pointed out that in contrast to the world of the superhero, in God’s kingdom, there is no closely matched fight between two opponents. Jesus has already won the day. Here’s another contrast that came to mind. » read more | 2 comments
War in the Kingdom of God (Part 1)Submitted by Jonathan on Sat, 2008-01-05 15:30. [ Blog ]So Scott's comment on peace got me thinking about the other side of things: war. Just like peace is totally different in the kingdom of God, so too is the concept of war. Let me illustrate by comparing the idea of doing battle in the kingdom of God to the battles that rage in the plotlines of your favorite superhero comic.* You may think that I'm being a little ridiculous here but give this a listen for a minute. I think that you’ll find that the average concept of spiritual warfare is more closely linked to superhero comics than to a kingdom understanding. » read more | 4 comments
