Our orphans

With all the talk going around about taking care of our "widows and orphans" I've been challenged on what this would look like locally. And so while we don't have orphanages that exist, we do have an overly taxed foster care system. I went to an info night for foster care last week, and just want to share some stats with you all to ponder... In BC there are currently: What a huge deficit these orphans are starting off on. How much more genuine love and care and attention do they require. As a single person living in a basement suite working full time, what can I do? I'm not sure yet. Going to Africa or India to be the next Mother Teresa sounds quite romantic...staying in Vancouver to take care of kids with FAS, ADHD, attachment disorders, and whatever other issues they are facing...not quite the same picture. How radical is God calling me (us) to be? what can i do?Submitted by Jolie on Fri, 2007-02-02 16:15.
Karen, i was so encouraged to hear your challenging thoughts and very interested that God seems to continue speaking into our (as in simple church peeps) lives about children. for sharing - thanks. jolie ![]() rock on with true religionSubmitted by Anonymous on Thu, 2007-02-01 12:53.
hi my name is jen. i'm new to BC and hope to come to housechurch on lonsdale on sun. was on the website. i have been unbelieveably compelled in the recent months with true religion being about something as seemingly small and insignificant as orphans and widows. in recent months, the lord has brought me to a place of strong urgent desire for a complete sweep of house within... a complete reality check of my discipleship, a compete giving of my entire life to his purposes and kingdom. i am stoked to hear that the spirit is moving within what i believe is "the few". the few who will stake all. and yes it is more romantic and compelling to "go" to a 3rd world country vs staying here. so perhaps this is more difficult now? all i know is that listening to john piper on www.desiringgod.org, some of his talks on missions will leave you desiring martyrdom, desiring loss of your life for his cause. it is incredible how when we slay ourselves in light of his brilliance, how we are truely satisfied, able to find Him, and fulfilled. thanks for stating what believers need to be called to. he's coming and we need to get serious, find our joy in his glory, and run hard. the world is watching and i dont get asked often enough to give reason for the hope within me... stay strong j Thanks for your thoughtsSubmitted by Taryn on Wed, 2007-01-31 10:53.
Thanks for your thoughts Karen! Over the last little while I have also been thinking about how I (we) could support the orphans in our community as well as those that care for them (whether it be in an orphanage or in a foster care situation). It is obviously on the Lord's heart so let's keep praying about it and see where God is calling us? |
