October 17 is the United Nations Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The Make Poverty History campaign has organized an event to honour the day called "Stand Up, Speak Out". The idea for the day is to have groups organize a "Stand Up, Speak Out" event where people come together and for one minute they stand up together as a sign of solidarity with the worlds poor. In conjunction with this, they together read a "poverty pledge". At the end of the stand-up minute a group count is taken as well as a photo. This is then submitted to the Make Poverty History organization and they are then going to submit these to the world leaders.

As a movement of churches who have been called by God to stand for justice for all people... it seems fitting that we join in. So, here is an idea: what if each of our churches organized an event, hosted it at one of our homes, and we invited our neighbors and friends to join in with us? The 14th St. is in... how about your church?

The information for how you register and organize can be found at this address: http://www.makepovertyhistory.ca/e/stand-up
