Whistler School is a Whistler based Bible school that is in its second year. Students travel from all over the world to spend four months living in the village - in the mornings they ski/board and in the afternoon they attend classes. Last year I did a week of teaching on "Jesus the Christ" and this year they asked me back and had me teach a second week as well. The second week was a book study on the Gospel of John.

This teaching is part of the first day. It introduces the gospel, helping to make sense of the background and context. It also gives crucial information to help us read the gospel well - getting all we can out of John's incredible gospel. A Family for a Family-less World

On our Feb. 25 City-Wide Gathering, the Mt. Seymour church shared about how they were given $200 to divide up and then distribute as each member saw fit. In the stories they reported back, it was pretty cool to see how even a little can go a long way in furthering God's kingdom. From this event they asked me to provide some teaching around the theme "Share the Wealth". This podcast is what God laid on my heart to teach. The following are some scriptures that you will need to have at hand: Luke 15:20-24 So he got up and went to his father, "But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him...the father said to his servants, 'Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let's have a feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.' So they began to celebrate. Romans 12:13 Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 1Peter 4:9 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. The old covenant of the law was fulfilled and being renewed and transformed into a brand new covenant - a covenant even more wonderful than the one that was made with Moses. The Spirit who came at Pentecost was to be both the sign that this new covenant was being enacted and also the hope/power of its fulfillment. In this fourth podcast we turn toward application, beginning to answer the question: what does it all mean? In this teaching we begin by seeing that it has something to do with us now being followers of Jesus.

Exodus 13-17 "I Will Provide!" Pt. 1

I've had on my heart the past couple of weeks the sense that many of you are tired. Maybe even you feel like you are in a bit of a dessert. Life is hard for you in this season. Or maybe you are finding this stage of the simplechurches journey to be a trial. Whatever the case, you find yourself longing for an easier road. But what if that is not God's will for you/us? What if he is the one that has led you into the dessert - because he knows that he has something better in store for you. And what if, part of that better isn't over the hill in the elusive "promise land" - but its right here in the dessert. I don't know if we'll ever fully embrace it - but most of life is lived in the dessert. And I beleive that it is orchastrated to be that way by God himself. Why? Because in the dessert, God has an ability to reveal himself and his care for a people like few other places. We tend to view the dessert with negative lenses - but what if the dessert is actually one of the most wonderful, God revealing places on earth. It was for the Israelites. This week and next week we're going to follow Israel as they leave Egypt and make their way to the Promised Land - via that dessert. As we do so we'll see things about ourselves, we'll see things about our place in simplechurches, we'll see things about the kind of people God is shaping us to be, and most of all we see things about God - things we can only fully see in the dessert. Think you are in the dessert? Don't fear. Don't fret. Don't long for another place - an easier place. Rejoice. Press on. Run the race. Keep going. God is with us... and he will provide. He will make himself known. It's the glory of the dessert.

Here we go. Here is part II of our walk through the desert as Israel leaves Egypt behind. This week we focus on the application of the teaching we received last week. If you have not listened to part I you should start there first. My wife said to me this week - "Boy, talk about the desert sure can be discouraging!" (I guess I have been talking about what I've been learning a fair bit). I trust that these talks are not discouraging for you. Just the opposite is my prayer. Personally, I've found it so encouraging to consider that yes, life can be hard, and the christian life can be a challenge - but faithful God is with us every step of the way! The first night we failed to record (I might re-record it) and the second night, after my computer was stolen, I lost the slide show that accompanied it. Background

The topic of this DeeperLife springs from two realities that seem to be at work in our world today:

Much has been written, acted, and spoken of in the past 10 years that has sought to erode the reliability of the scriptures as we presently have them. Many of these things have been blatantly fictional, or conspiratorial but regardless they have still planted seeds of doubt. Can we really trust the scriptures?
As people within the church struggle with issues of faith today, the core of these struggles continue to come back to the scriptures. If we can trust them as they are, then many of our questions are resolved. However, if we have wonderings of doubt about their reliability, then we are prone to remain in a place of disquiet.

In this DeeperLife we are going to look at the Bible as a historical document seeking to resolve some of the deep questions we have regarding its authenticity. In the end, we will still be asked to take steps of faith (with things of God, this will always be a requirement) but perhaps the steps won't be quite as big as you had maybe perceived them to be.

This teaching begins with some of the basics behind the Bible's writing and transmission. It then responds to one question "I’ve heard that the Bible was formed by a religious committee that wanted to preserve a particular religious viewpoint. Is this true?"

Paul has finally made it to Jerusalem, and with it comes his trial before the Jews. Eventually he is moved to Caesarea on the coast where he remains in prison for the next two years. Background

The topic of this DeeperLife springs from two realities that seem to be at work in our world today:

Much has been written, acted, and spoken of in the past 10 years that has sought to erode the reliability of the scriptures as we presently have them. This is a teaching Brent intended to give last year at our first deeper-life. The timing wasn't right. Given our present focus of teaching, he sensed God was saying that now was the time! In this teaching, Brent looks at some of the key marks of the coming Messiah that the prophet Isaiah spoke of. He then looks at the ministry of Jesus and reveals how Jesus fulfilled Isaiah's words in his own life. While walking looking at Isaiah and Jesus it becomes clear that the Messiah would be concerned about bringing salvation and justice in four key ways: ** deliverance of the poor and powerless from the economic deprivation of the greedy ** lifting the foot of the domineering power off the oppressed ** establishing peace and nonviolence ** restoring the outcasts, the nations, the Gentiles, the exiles, and the refugees to community In other-words: As the messiah of God's kingdom, Jesus fulfilled the expectations of Isaiah. Part of this fulfillment involved his bringing about justice in the above four ways. To link to the earlier talks, it was through these four activities that Jesus participated in bringing in the reign of God on earth as it was in heaven. In these things, Jesus was about the grand work of the messiah - defeating the enemies of God and drawing the exiles and outsiders home to his kingdom and its banquet table. Question: what would it look like for the church today to follow the messiah in his work?

This week we are looking at "unity" as we work through this whole community thing - becoming a community with Jesus at the center. in preparation for this teaching you might want to read: Genesis 2:23-25; 1 Cor 12:13; Col 1:19-20,3:11-17; Eph. 2:11-22; and Rev. 7:19-20. Afterwards two questions to wrestle with: 1) Read James 3 - How is your tongue aiding in brining unity to life? How is it eroding unity? 2) Mark Peters at the retreat talked about the trinity as a perfect portrait of unity. The key to this was each member of the Trinity submitting to each other. Do some study on how the scripture speaks of submission in God (begin in Phil 2) then ask how this relates to your life and how you are called to submit to your fellow brothers and sisters.

Unfortunately, the teaching from the night itself was lost - and with it the many excellent questions and comments that came during the discussion. None-the-less, I've recaptured the bulk of the material here, and in a question section at the end I respond to a couple of the questions that were raised at the end of the night. Further, in re-teaching this material, I tried to incorporate many of the helpful insights that were raised by people during the evening. All that said, this teaching looks at the death of Jesus from a historical perspective. Through it all here are a few questions to explore: 1) How does this call to be different intersect with Paul's statement that he will become all things to all people in order that some may be saved? In other words, how does our call to be different intersect with our call to be relavent? 2) Read through 1 Cor. 13. Understanding that these things he says about love directly apply to how we live in community with each other, what have been the most dramatic displays of this kind of love within your community? This week we consider the idea of "life" and how we are to be a people who are experiencing "life" together. Before you get into it you might want to read: John 10; 1 Thes. and Gal. 5 As you listen, here are some questions to wrestle through: 1) When you think about the fact that "Jesus has saved you" - do you consider this just in terms of heaven? How would it impact you and your life to view your salvation as something that is a present reality? In what ways are you experiencing this to be true? 2) How does Jesus demonstrate zoe life? What is it that you see in him that clearly is "different"? How is his life different from the average persons experience? Can you believe that he wants that kind of a life for you? 3) As was said in the talk, we will not experience the fullness of zoe life until heaven, but is there a part of this life that you know you are to be experiencing now - but are not? What is that part of life? Why is it not being experienced? Are their roadblocks in the way? Vision - Mission Pt. 1

This week we are on to stanza three - following Jesus into mission. Anytime we talk about mission, it seems like it can so quickly spiral into self-condemnation. The line of thinking goes... "I'm obviously not doing enough! Time to do better." From a teaching persepctive it can seem difficult to offer a challenge w/o laying down the guilt. Lets just say it right up front: the point of the next three week is by no means guilt. Guilt is not a tool of the Spirit. That said, we do want to be a people that are open to being challenged into leading a life that is even more oriented around God's plan and kingdom. So the prayer is that we'd rise to the challenge and where there creeps in guilt - well, lets offer it to God and ask him to plant in us a seed of hope. So come Spirit. Stir us again with where you are leading us as a network of churches. Give us a heart for your world! Now for this week, here are a few thoughts to consider. 1) What is the average state of your days? Do you seem to be alive to where God is moving and what is happening around you - or is there most often another reality at work? 2) Read Mt. 9:36 and the surrounding story. What do you see in Jesus? What of his character do you need more of? Welcome the Spirit. 3) Today, you will engage the world around you. From those you know to those that you do not know. What will it mean for you to "see" this world? Why don't you ask the Spirit to equip you and then intentionally engage in the exercise of seeing. The first step in mission is to actually see. 4) When the talk is over, read Lk 15 - the Story of the Prodigal Son. What is it about the fathers reaction that so fits with todays talk? What does this reaveal to you about God's heart?

[Note: John's gospel has clearly been set up in two sections. Hi guys... so for the next couple of weeks we are going to post part one and part two of our "Kingdom, Justice and Mission in Vancouver" talks. The timing is perfect as it dovetails with the "Vision -Mission" talks that I was recording prior to the conference.

In the new year, we'll wrap up our vision talks and move on to new things - but for now... keep being stirred by these themes that the Lord is working out in our midst.

Students travel from all over the world to spend four months living in the village - in the mornings they ski/board and in the afternoon they attend classes. Last year I did a week of teaching on "Jesus the Christ" and this year they asked me back and had me teach a second week as well. The second week was a book study on the Gospel of John.
This Teaching
This teaching is part of the first day. It introduces the gospel, helping to make sense of the background and context. Kingdom of God | Pentecost | A New Day Dawns (Law2)

This is Podcast 3 in a series of teachings that looks at the Kingdom of God from the angle of Pentecost. What happened on that day and how does it relate to the kingdom and life within it? This series seeks to answer some of those questions. In the second talk, we concluded that Pentecost (among other important things) was a massive announcement declaring that God was officially enacting a new covenant with people. The old covenant of the law was fulfilled and being renewed and transformed into a brand new covenant - a covenant even more wonderful than the one that was made with Moses. The Spirit who came at Pentecost was to be both the sign that this new covenant was being enacted and also the hope/power of its fulfillment. In this third podcast we do two things: First, we establish some biblical support for this conclusion; explaining that what happened at Pentecost was actually the fulfillment of a long hoped for promise that began hundreds of years prior. Secondly, we explain more fully the idea of "covenant" - don't understand what the terms old covenant and new covenant really mean? You should after listening to this teaching. Why does all this matter? So many reasons. But for now just one: because what happened at Pentecost was the beginning of a new contract between God and people - a contract which you have stepped into. It is a contract of love rooted in Jesus. It is a contract that has at its very core this reality: God has given you his Holy Spirit and by this Spirit he is enabling you to live as a holy people in his Kingdom. Prior to Pentecost such a claim could never have been made. The only way we can fully appreciate the wonder of what happened at Pentecost is by understanding what life with God was like prior to that day. This talk begins by taking us into some of that history and some of the longings that people had for a "new covenant".
