In Philippians 2, the call to value others above ourselves isn't about being nice or doing servant-like things on autopilot. It goes to our motives and our identity. Paul tells us to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus: God, who didn't use his equality with God to his own advantage. Instead he emptied himself, became a servant, and went to the cross.
